Natural Enhancement can be yours!

As long as by natural you mean stash, and by enhancement you mean procuring more of said stash. All you have to do is run into Sharon and her twisted Mary Poppins bag of doom!New Stitchjones yarn

I mean, seriously. Was I supposed to resist this?! The colors are just yummmmmmmy. The worsted weight yarn is destined to become a happy flappy hat, I think. It beckons me. The sock yarn might be socks. Or it might not. That depends ;-)

And some other sock yarn that is not socks:

Secret Project :)

Hmmm, wonder what that is? Well, I can’t really say. Soon :)

So I finally got a good look at what I’d bought at the coast. My Yarn Shop is cramped and kind of dark (especially where this yarn was – she’d just gotten a huge shipment which was in front of these shelves!), but I picked this out and just figured “what the hay.” Turns out it’s fantastic. See?

JJ's Specialty Yarns

375 yards of aran weight bliss. I mean, wow. Awesome.

And last but certainly not least, the wonderful fiber I got from Heritage Textile Arts Guild:

Romney and Alpaca

I’m not sure what to do with the mogit Romney. I just thought it was so pretty. They had some eesit too, but I had to pick only one. ;-) The alpaca is destined to be a hat for V-man. Hopefully we’ll have a winter cold enough for an alpaca hat next year, hehe.

So glad I finally got to hang out with the Knitbloggers again. It was hard to leave early, but there is that whole bedtime issue… sigh. And if I’d stayed any longer I’d have come home with even more yarn! hehe.

Ok, eyes are droopy…. off to bed.

Red sky at morn

So the nice thing about pre-dawn commuting is that you get to see the sunrise every day. Today Ma Nature treated us to this:

red sky at morn

It was really even brighter and more pink than all that. I was in a hurry, so I didn’t really have time to stabilize the shot. So, blurry it is. Oh well. :-P

So my first day socks are really more like first week socks. They’re still going:

First Day Socks - WIP

there are probably a few inches to go still. For some reason, they just seem to go on forever. Maybe it’s because at the rate they began, they really should have been done the next day. Well, soon enough – I have a lot more to knit.

Like a little something out of this:

Sweater-to-be

This is a little swatch for a little something out of a Stitchjones b-side yarn – aka, a test skein. I can’t really say what it’ll be yet – for reasons solely based in superstition. I know, I know, I’m a logical individual, but you must forgive these occasional transgressions. ;-)

I can give a little taste of something coming, though:

Preview

Yes, I know the photo quality is crap. that’s because it’s zoomed in and cropped. So there! :-P

On the work front, there are a lot of cool things happening. That and a ton of housecleaning – literally and figuratively. I have a lot of errata (and in some cases, errors so egregious that the patterns have been pulled) to work through, and there’s the promise of a lot more. This is tedious, but it is a great window into what I don’t want to do in my own patterns. I do have one in the works – it’ll be out this summer. :) As for the literal housekeeping, our office is moving upstairs next month, and in preparation, we have to pack up the whole department. Because I have the least amount of desk belongings, I volunteered for the largest project – moving the yarn wall. That means I get to go through 50 or so tubs full of yarn, take out the discontinued stuff, reorganize, repack, and take them to their new home. Oh darn. ;-) I’m hoping to snag a discontinued color of every yarn line to swatch with, so I can get a good feel for all of the yarns.

Well, on that note, I’m yawning… time for my shower, with enough time for a little knitting before bed.

Oh, and PS – watch this.

Ok, where to start?

How about with giants?

Monster

I am the bringer of NIGHT.

GIANT BUN - yet, no bacon.

This has been an interesting few weeks :)

The Dino was at OMSI. V-man and I went to the exhibit there on Chinese fossils. Very cool. That was my ‘last weekend as an unemployed bum’ treat.

The seastack – that was Saturday in Bandon. A road trip seemed in order, so after work Friday, we packed a few bags and headed south. It was an adventure, mostly in a good way. All I have to say is that Yachats saved our butts. Yep.

And the burger – what is it with me finding oversized food? unlike the chicken schnitzel club, which was totally normal human sized except for the bacon, this burger was just plain huge. It was easily a pound. I ate about a third of it before I was stuffed. (I ate most of the fries too… they were gooooood). It felt pretty awful to throw so much food away, but there was no other real choice.

It doesn’t help that earlier in the day I’d had another large meal – this time a double patty elk burger. First time I’ve had elk. Not bad.

So…. phew. Roadtrips usually result in the consumption of food that I wouldn’t ordinarily touch. Still reeling from all that.

I did make a few non-scenery stops, though. We decided to do the ‘ask the next person where to go next, then ask who you find there’ thing, and ended up in some odd places. One was pretty much all of Coos Bay. That is an odd place. I stopped at My Yarn Shop in Coos Bay, which was more full than a cat hoarder’s litterbox. It was so stuffed to the gills (and the ceiling) that I actually got claustrophobic! I found some neat New Zealand hand-dyed wool, and the lovely proprietress directed me to the mall in town, which contained a fiber guild (?!) between Macy’s and the ATV/RV showcase. You know, right where it belongs.

Anyway, the kind lady in there sold me some local wool and alpaca roving, which will become a hat for V-man. Someday ;-) She then gave us directions to Whiskey Run beach, on which a shipwreck just emerged. She said we see signs, that it was between there and Bandon. Well, we saw no signs, and ended up going to Bandon instead.

I only wish the timing had been right so that we could have stopped into Dyelots in Eugene when we spent the night. Oh well. Eugene is close enough. I can always go back!

SO. the job.

It’s awesome. Like, really cool. I get paid to play with yarn. Is there really anything better? Well, ok, maybe if they gave me free bacon every day. But anyway, the learning curve has been pretty slight so far – I think they chose to hire now so that I could get used to it before crunch time hits. So far, hopefully I’m doing well! I really like all the gals at work there, and so far I haven’t been too overwhelmed. I’m still learning what I can and can’t talk about in reference to what I do, so I probably can’t mention much here. But I’ve gotten to see all of the new colors of everything, and the new yarn lines. It’s tre cool. I feel like I’m about 90% integrated in the staff. In fact, it was only one day – ONE – before a co-worker offered me a ride partway home and to work. My commute is now about two hours and forty-five minutes round trip. Almost cut in half. And, where she drops me off/picks me up is very convenient to other things I might want to do.

Point is, I can still go to Westside Wednesday PDXknitbloggers meetups! WOOO! I probably won’t make every week, and I can’t stay too long (since I need to be in bed by 9-9:30), but I can go. That’s such a relief.

And I can cook. And live. It’s nice. I haven’t gotten enough into the swing of it yet to have a system down, but everything in its own good time :)

As far as knitting goes, I’m a couple inches into the ribbing on the purple and yellow socks. Other than that, I’ve not knit a stitch (well, ok, gauge swatches for another project) but for what I’m doing at work. I got a whole whopping inch of knitting in all weekend.

But that’s ok. I’ve got time. Mostly.

but not now – it’s my bedtime! G’night.

time for one more

I’m off to bed in a moment, but a brief note:

At Twisted last night I bought this:

Raspberry Lemonade

How long is my commute?

This long.

First Day socks - quick!

All things considered, not bad. My hands kinda hurt, though.

Ok, a more thorough run down when I’m not so wiped out. :)

I’ll be in my office getting…..getting ready.

And if you can name where that line comes from, I’ll give you a cookie :)  I have done a lot of knitting in the past few days, but most of my time has been spent preparing for the transition back to work. I have to be up in five hours. Hehe. Good thing they have a coffee machine…

So, I’ll update about my knitting when I have time. I have a feeling this week will not be that time. But, as soon as I can settle into some sort of routine and can make some time, I’ll be back around.

So, off to bed for a few winks, then off to start my new life. :)

bonkers

Does anyone remember that candy? I used to love it. The commercials were hilarious. Anyway, bonkers is jsut how I feel right now. My transition to a long-haul commuter, and back to the working world in general, is off to a confused start. I have to get used to a five-hour commute and all that it entails, and be ready to essentially spend all of my free time on public transit.

Breakfast will be consumed on the trip there, and dinner on the way home. I will have to pack all of my food for the day with me. So, I need to go grocery shopping this weekend. I’ll have to keep cereal and soymilk there for breakfasts. I will probably cook rarely now, so I have to get used to not eating hot food. I won’t have leftovers from going out to eat, either – I will no longer have time to go out. And I won’t be able to go hang out with the PDXknitbloggers, either – or anyone else, for that matter. I will live on the bus.

That said, I’ve looked into getting a data package from my cell company so that I can at least have internet access wherever I am – in transit or otherwise. That will allow me to still communicate with people, take care of freelance work, blog, and bum around online while I’m traveling. It’s $40 a month, but that’s a small price to pay for the convenience, and it won’t put a huge dent into my car savings. When I do finally get a car, I can cancel the plan. I think it’s worth it for my sanity.

What I’m hoping is that the bus and trains will be relatively empty between 5:30-6:30 a.m. That will allow me to really get some things done.

The hardest part for me is not seeing the V-man, or anyone else, for long periods of time. It’s really not worth his time or effort to come see me when I get home from work, since I’ll be getting home between 7:30-:45 p.m. and need to be in bed by 9. So we’ll have weekends, I guess, when he’s not gaming. It’s going to be tough.

But, we’ll make it work. We have to. I have to. It’s not like I really have much choice right now! All of this, though, the planning, the slow and shocking realization that I will be losing all my own time, has really started to poke at my brain. Bonkers.

But for now, I can at least weave in ends, for I’ve finished my gloves:

Handspun Gloves - cover

Handspun Gloves - convertible

And there’s still plenty of the yarn left, definitely enough for a cute little headband. Works for me!

I went downtown today to pick up some office supplies and pay my phone bill, and decided to stop by the old haunt to tell the Shibui folks that I’d need to end my pattern-writing days with them. But the interested parties were at Madrona (I should’ve known), and instead had a lovely time hanging out with Patrick and Tsipa, whom I have not seen in far too long. We had a nice long chat and caught up – it was so darn good to see her again. I hope I can see her more often, but then, I hope I can see the inside of my apartment more often, too. Hehe.

I’ve got some things to do in preparation for next week… I have a lot of employee-handbook stuff to read, and I have to scramble to get some things done around the house. *sigh* This is going to be one heck of a transition.

But, I’ve looked into some places to move in to, and the market is actually looking pretty good right now. V-man and I are going to go tour some more convenient neighborhood locations that I’ve not had the convenience of seeing before.  Hopefully the madness of the commute won’t drive me to move before October, but if it does, I want to know where I’m going.

Man oh man.

It’s a miracle

You are now talking to (er, reading?) the official Garment Designer for KnitPicks! I got the job! YEEEEHAH!

The last few days (in which I haven’t been posting) has been spent frantically finishing Shibui things in the event of me getting this job. And I did. I’ll tell the good folks of Shibui tomorrow. :) So what have I been doing for them? Here’s a clue:

Heel

It’s so telling, isn’t it? hehe. I can’t really go putting anything more than that out there. But that is a nifty toe-up gusset heel.

I have not had bacon since the last entry, but I have worked on those handspun gloves:

handspun gloves - fingered!

Handspun gloves - fingers done!

Woohoo! Just have the mitten tops to do.

Other than that, I haven’t made a stitch elsewhere for days. The boring charcoal socks and the chenille afghan are languishing; the two glove patterns, tam and cardigan patterns have not progressed (though I did buy the rest of the cardigan yarn). All of my energy and time has been spent gearing up for my interview this week, and darn if it didn’t go perfectly.

So, before next Wednesday I’m going to send the notices out to my agencies to un-list me, call my financial advisor, and get some other ducks in a row. I also have to read all of the employment papers and whatnot and get that all signed and good-to-go. And I’ll see if I can’t get some knitting done in there too.

What an eventful day. Got a job, made some great progress on Sharon’s design package, had disgusting greasy celebratin’ food with the V-man, and got to spend some Q-T with the lovely PDXknitbloggers this evening. I am completely, utterly, viciously exhausted. I am going to sleep. I deserve it.

The whole world now knows.

I love bacon. Love, love love bacon. Bacon makes everything good. Broccoli? Add bacon! Toast? Get that bacon! Donuts? Bacon, bacon bacon. But somehow the good folks at Berlin restaurant didn’t realize that and put this weird “sandwich” thing around my bacon. How dare they! But I still liked it. For it had bacon.

BACON

(in case you’re wondering, that’s a pretty standard sized burger bun there. That is abnormally large bacon. But do I complain? Oh no. No no no. For it is bacon, you see.)

So, I got up (too) early and headed out with the lovely lassies of the PDXknitbloggers on a little jaunt over to Yarnia. We didn’t quite overwhelm the place, but we came close! I hadn’t had the chance to take photos of the place last time I went, so I took the opportunity this time.

Here we have some of their pre-blended cones:

Yarnia - pre-made cones

The wool selection:

Yarnia - wall of wool

And the winder doohickey, hard at work:

Yarnia - Doohickey

I was a good girl and didn’t buy anything today. I have enough yarn. Seriously! ;-) But it was really fun to hang out with all the gals (and finally meet Monica!). Can’t wait till next Wednesday. And to see all of their photos of me and the bacon monster. :-P

I also had lots of traveling time to work on my gloves:

Handspun Gloves - coming along

And with the cuffs extended:

Handspun Gloves - Long

It looks like I’ll be able to make convertible mittens and still have plenty of yarn left over. I’ll probably make a headband with it. Sweet!

Anyhoo, I’m pretty beat and also dehydrated from the bacon. (had bacon for breakfast, too) So, I’m gonna have some agua and hang out with the V-man a little. *yawn* And then some coffee would be nice :) Then, it’s time to tie up the loose ends on that Shibui pattern – ran into Sandy today, and told her I’d be heading her way tomorrow to drop it off.

And the plot thickens

I just got a random phone call – someone from a different company in Vancouver found my resume on Jobster and called me to interview for a graphic design position. Totally, completely random. So, I have to go to Vancouver twice next week. Twice! I think V-man is gonna be a little suspicious of my car-borrowing needs, but well, that’s life. I’m glad to have another interview! Now I need to go find out what that company is all about. Actually I’d kind of rather take the bus. Isn’t that kinda funny?

Anyway.

So my algae soft-as-kittens handspun began its life as mittens last night:

handspun gloves - cuff you!

Already I’ve got about 6″ of cuff. I’m going for 7. Yes, I like short sleeves and long cuffs. I must be Irish or something.*

What I love about handspun yarns is their total randomness. Well, a good spinner can execute some manner of control over the way colors blend, but when you just decide to spin and ply haphazardly, it’s nice to come up with some interesting serendipities. Like Striping:

Handspun gloves - random

It’s hard to tell from the photo, but the left mitten (on top) stripes for a few inches. As in, no real marling, but two plies of the exact same color for several yards. In fact, that mitten and that whole ball of yarn that goes with it looks like it’s going to have several portions of real striping. The other one looks a lot more like the other handspun stuff I’ve made – marled, wacky, and random.

I like them both, and I like that they won’t match :)

I’ve not made a terrible lot of progress elsewhere. But I’m not too concerned :) I’ve got the weekend. But that will be interrupted by a little jaunt back over to Yarnia with the PDXknitbloggers gals. Woo!

* Many Fair Isle and other Irish Fishermen’s jumpers were knit with short sleeves (3/4 length) so that they didn’t get run through whatever was in the man’s hand. He wore matching gaiters on his wrists, that, when wet and worn, could be changed more easily than a whole jumper.

On randomness and swatches

Well. So that lightbulb that blew up during the writing of my last post? Well, I went to go change it later in the evening. It’s a ceiling sconce, standard issue apartment fixture, that’s a two-bulb design. A month or two ago one of the two 100w incandescent bulbs was flickering and blew up so I replaced it with a 75w CF bulb. Usually the two bulbs go out pretty concurrently, so I figured the other 100w had finally gone. Well, this is what I found:

The suspect and the victim

The heat from the remaining 100w bulb had totally fried the CF bulb. Not to mention that between that and whatever boom had happened in there, it actually damaged the socket. To see just how burnt that casing is, here’s a new CF next to the busted one:

How to blow up a CF bulb

So, word to the wise: If you have a multiple-bulb fixture and want to change from incandescent to compact fluorescent, change them all at the same time.

//end public service message.

I swatched for the Lisa shrug last night:

Lisa Shrug - Swatch

The instructions clearly state to machine wash the swatch before measuring, so that I will. Right now it’s spot-on for stitch gauge, but the row gauge – not so much. I think it’s in the nature of linen, heavy as it is, to stretch out like crazy. So the gauge is nearly square for this garment – 6sts/7r=1″. Naturally, that’s a bit of a difficult gauge to achieve while knitting, but once it’s gotten wet and beaten up and then dried, I think it’ll behave a bit more how it should. I haven’t worked much with linen, so this will be fun. :)

I also decided that, since I have so much handspun hanging around now, I might as well knit some of it into something. So, the blue-green merino I have (that I dubbed ‘Algae’) was already in a center-pull ball, I grabbed my lovely size 5 Harmony needle, and cast on:

Algae - soft like kittens

And lo and behold, this terribly poorly spun mess is turning out to be the softest thing I have ever knit with. Move over Malabrigo, here’s gin-u-wine woolly clouds of handspun loveliness! It feels like petting the belly of a four-week old kitten. Soft and squishy and just awesome. I had thought it would work well as a hat, but I don’t want to waste that softness over the ball of death that is my hair – oh no. I believe this will be mittens. Convertible if possible. I do have 318 yards of it, and a little bit left of the singles if I get close to the end. So, what I’m thinking of doing is separating it into two balls, and magic looping some gloves. I would usually do one from each end, but I know there’s a lot of kinking in this yarn that needs to be untwisted as I go – easier to accomplish with two.

LUSCIOUS! As if I don’t have enough going on, right? ;-)

SPEAKING of enough going on… I just got called back for a second interview next week! EEEEEE!! I’m so excited. Just have to send some info to them, and I’m off! :-D
